Atlantica Online

PUBLISHER: Valope | DEVELOPER: NDoors | GENRE: MMORPG/Strategy
THEME: Fantasy | PLATFORM: Download | STATUS: Final

Atlantica Online may seem like your ordinary fantasy MMORPG, but beneath the surface there’s a clever and original mix of gameplay elements. The combat system is more like that of a tactical-RPG, comparable to Mytheon, something that is very rare in the world of free-to-play MMO games.

Combat plays out as a turn-based strategy affair, with our characters having to attack the enemies by using action points. There are mercenaries to help us in combat and they can also be controlled just like the main character, even leveling up. However, if your avatar dies you lose the battle, even if there are mercenaries still fighting. It takes a few combats to understand how everything works, but then we’re left with a very clever system that manages to make Atlantica Online something of a rarity.

But before this, we need to create our character using a very simple editor, lacking in advanced options. Then we enter a world that isn’t very impressive nowadays, but still manages to charm and to distinguish itself from the usual lore seen in games such as Martial Empires or Perfect World. Best of all is that the game world is incredibly huge, with over sixty villages in the game – luckily there’s a teleporting option.

Atlantica Online stands out thanks to its original blend of MMORPG and turn-based combat, but also due to the innovative setting. It’s still a fantasy game and sports quite a few clichés, but not so much as many other free MMO games.
