World of Speed is a free-to-play MMO racing game from Slightly Mad Studios, makers of Project Cars and the Shift Unleashed games for Electronic Arts. Described as a “free-to-compete AAA massively multiplayer online action-racing game which introduces a new level of connected competition to the racing genre”, World of Speed focuses on teamplay, with the option to create Clubs, customize their logos, earn access to a Club garage social hub, compete against other clubs, show off in the Airfield Playground and battle in high-stakes races in Territory Wars. Circuits are based in real life tracks from known cities all around the world, such as London, Moscow or Monaco.
The idea is to make World of Speed accessible to all players, experienced and new alike. One example of this plan is the addition of a respawn button that will bring the player back to the race within a minimum delay. Slightly Mad also wants to reward all players after a race and not just the top racers – every player will earn points for their driver score thanks to several different actions that can be accomplished. Actions such as drifting a given distance or leading the pack for a certain time, for example. And that leads us to Slightly Mad’s idea of drivers specializing themselves in particular roles, pretty much as in a proper MMORPG. World of Speed will have a big social focus, including one among various game modes where players race to dominate and own a city.
World of Speed looks the part and will hopefully play better than its F2P racing rivals such as Ridge Racer Driftopia or even Need For Speed World.
