EA shutting down Battlefield Heroes, Need For Speed World and more

Electronic Arts is going to shut down four of its free-to-play PC games in about 90 days, the studio has announced. You probably know and even played some of these games quite a bit, with a few of them being frontrunners of the free-to-play model: Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World and FIFA World. Patrick Soderlund, EVP of EA Studios said that “these games will be live for another 90 days, after which they will go offline.”

We had quite a bit of fun with Battlefield Heroes mostly, a game that released in 2009 and managed to have 7 million subscribers by 2011. However, times have changed the playerbase of this and the other games above apparently isn't relevant anymore.

On the other hand, EA happily announced that one of its other free-to-play games, the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic is doing well, and “continues to have a very enthusiastic and growing player community”, with more story-driven game updates planned for this year.
