RuneScape 3 announced for this summer

runescape

Jagex announced RuneScape 3, a sequel of sorts to one of the most popular free MMORPG games ever. According to the surprise announcement video, RuneScape 3 won’t be a completely new game, instead building on RuneScape 2. Players will be able to login with their current accounts and keep their avatars beginning this summer, when the game should be released.

RuneScape 3 should look a lot better and be much smoother with the HTML5 engine. More info will be released during the coming weeks.

I never really saw the appeal of the original Runescape, everything took forever to level, the weapons and items all had very contrived linear progression based on their materials and the combat required very little skill or know how especially at the earlier levels. Then Runescape 2 came along and managed to improve almost nothing with the exception of some particularly poorly optimized cinematic and a few other graphical components which although lacking in the original weren’t nearly as important as the game play to begin with. If Jagex wants to make this game worth playing they’ve got to keep up with the standards other games set forward or do one better and thus far they’ve simply failed to adapt, they did not build their game to age well or even really play well and now I suppose they’re trying to hype it up again a bit too pull back their audience.

I get the distinct feeling that this is a complete waste of everyone’s time theirs included. The odds are against them on this one to say the least and they would have an easier time of it if they would just create a new game from the ground up and crown it the new Runescape complete with interesting combat, decent animations and skills that aren’t a grind to level, etc. The game never had a very good feature set and now they have the chance to change that it’s just that they haven’t. I can only assume that some people still play or change would have been forced on them but as it stands the games not worth playing and likely won’t be even after this Runescape 3 update.

Failing a real improvement to Runescape they should just throw they’re entire team at Arcanists, now that was actually fun.

Now that is one amazing opinion there, thanks for sharing it with us! I’m sure a few millions of RuneScape players will disagree with you (I’m not personally one of them, never got into the game tbh), but I can see why they are deciding to upgrade the game instead of launching a completely new RuneScape altogether – the playerbase is still so huge that even the slightest risk of scattering it (and likely to a new game with a lot less content and less means of keeping players around and paying for stuff) would be massive.
Now, I wouldn’t call this RuneScape 3, but RuneScape V3, but that’s just me :)
