The Secret World is relaunching with “adjustments to business model”, free story content

Conan Exiles developer Funcom

Funcom's The Secret World is one of the big MMORPGs that has managed to stand the test of time and also the test of the buy-to-play business model, being around since 2012 and not requiring the payment of a subscription. You can, of course, pay for one if you want to enjoy some benefits.

In Funcom's fourth quarter 2016 financial report there was some interesting information about the studio's games, including the recent Conan Exiles which just happens to be making tons of money, but those figures aren't yet part of this report. Moving onto The Secret World, Funcom is planning a relaunch during the first half of 2017 with relaunch activities beginning late March and involving things such as a redesigned new player experience, improvements to gameplay including combat, new retention systems such as daily rewards and – and this is the part that interests us the most – “adjustments to the business model, including allowing access to the story content for free”. You can read it for yourself in the image below, especially the part that ends with “as with any business model adjustments there is a significant risk attached to this change.”

The question that remains is: will The Secret World switch to free-to-play as we know it or will it be limited in some way to the story content? This will be answered soon, we're sure.
