Getting to Know… Call of Duty Online (Free to Play Online Shooter China)

Call of Duty Online is the free-to-play China exclusive spin-off of the extremely profitable and successful series published by Activision. Developed by Raven Software and published by Tencent, Call of Duty Online takes the classic gameplay of the first-person shooter, with PvE modes, weapon customization, airstrikes, bosses and more. Chris Evans, more known for his Captain America role, was part of the marketing campaign for Call of Duty Online in China, but while this is an Eastern exclusive, there’s still some hope that Activision decides to release it in the west.

I did not expect this to have campaign missions. I mean, I guess I should have, since it’s the answer to the normal games just for Chinese regions where they like their games this way. Still it’s surprising. I expected NOTHING but remixing already-existing stages if they were going to do that.

Looks like quality for sure – I wondered what Raven was doing these days. And it looks like they did a good job building this for Tencent and China. Good for them.

I don’t know if I need to see it personally. I mean, we have the real-deal games and they’re already so, so popular here. Repackaging them this way, I don’t think (just my opinion) would excite many people. Especially when they hear the term “free to play”? They’d probably rather just snatch up a bunch of COD titles for super cheap during a Steam Sale or what-have-you then deal with a customization shop. That’s just the way too many gamers think… or at least the ones who would be attracted to this. Just my opinion. Still, good look at the game!

It would certainly be a gamble having this competing with proper CoD titles in the west, and that’s probably what Activision is considering. I believe they don’t want the “internal competition”, at least while the retail CoDs are as profitable as they currently are.
