Bungie’s Destiny isn’t going free-to-play… yet?

Out of nowhere, Bungie's online shooter Destiny appeared as a free game on Xbox Live and suddenly there were rumors that the base game would be transitioning to free-to-play, something that wouldn't be completely out of place considering that the sequel is allegedly planned to release in 2017.

However, it appears that the vanilla Destiny was just a mess-up. Bungie has cleared things up with the following statement:

“The original Destiny adventure may appear to be free on some digital console marketplaces.

While players may download the Destiny base game, they will only be granted access to the Destiny Trial Mode for free. If players wish to progress through the original Destiny adventure via digital download, they will be required to purchase Destiny – The Collection to gain access to this content.”

The second major Destiny expansion, Rise of Iron, launches this September, as well as Destiny: The Collection. Who knows, maybe next year the base Destiny game actually goes free-to-play, in anticipation for the sequel.
