Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming is an official game releasing in 2019

Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming official game

Are you a Game of Thrones fan? Is your body ready for some great news and possibly also for a bit of a disappointment? Great, let's talk about today's announcement of Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming.

Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming is an officially licensed browser game in development by Yoozoo Games and to be published by GTArcade. If these two names don't ring a bell, know that they are the makers of the League of Angels browser MMORPG series – the ones where high quality artwork is put to use in a by-the-numbers browser game. Our dream of seeing a developer such as CDProjekt land the Game of Thrones license remains unfulfilled, and probably will forever stay that way.

But back to Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming. The announcement was short and the official website is bare-bones, to say the least – you can sign up already -, but after digging a while we discovered what kind of game this is. Sorry to break the news to you, but Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming isn't an MMORPG – although being a browser-based game, it would most likely be a re-skinned League of Angels. This is, in fact, a real-time strategy game built using the Unity engine.

You play the role of a Westeros lord who has to save the people plagued by war and put an end to the endless conflicts between the Seven Kingdoms. You have to build your base, expand your territory, recruit characters from the popular TV show (Daenerys for me, thank you!), train your army and… obviously fight to stop all the fighting. That's just how it goes.

The developers say that Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming has “beautifully rendered characters and scenery designed by renowned artists”, so let's hope at least that it does the show's settings justice. I'm fairly convinced that it won't bring anything new to the table in terms of gameplay – my mind keeps taking me back to Plarium's real-time strategy games, but hopefully Yoozoo will prove me wrong. The release is planned for Spring 2019 and for now we only have the short teaser that you can see below.

In a related note, Bigpoint's official Game of Thrones MMORPG called Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms remains missing in action. Hey, it was announced in 2012, so maybe let's give them another six years to get it done, right?
