Athlon’s MMORPG “will have zero impact” on Lord of the Rings Online

Lord of the Rings free MMORPG Athlon Games

The recent announcement of a new MMORPG based on the Tolkien's Middle-earth raised some doubts about where the actual Lord of the Rings Online MMO from Standing Stone Games sits. A look at the official forums was enough to see that some players are also curious about the fate of this game, and how they will co-exist.

Just as we thought, the LOTRO team isn't too stressed about this situation. Community Manager Cordovan says that the announcement of the new game won't have any impact on the licensing or development plans of the current game:

“The news will not have any impact on our development plans or licensing. We always welcome competition, and wish them the best of luck!”

Other members of the forum are also quick to point that Athlon's game isn't exactly a rival, considering that it is set “long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.” So, this could in fact bring even more players to Lord of the Rings Online, something that the upcoming Amazon Studios' Lord of the Rings TV show will also help, when it eventually launched in 2021.

No matter what, Athlon's Middle-earth MMORPG is probably two to three years away of a beta release, so there is certainly no need for players of Lord of the Rings Online to worry for quite some time – or at all, we shall see.
