Riot Games is seriously thinking about making an MMORPG

Riot Games League of Legends MMORPG

Remember that MMO tweet that League of Legends developer Riot Games intrigued the community with about a week ago? As it turns out, they are seriously considering it, and they should too – when you're a studio with 2,500 people and only one game officially released, you need to keep everyone busy. Riot could be testing several ideas, as cofounder Marc Merrill said to Variety:

“We’re emerging from being the ‘League of Legends’ company to whatever it will be in the future. We’ve been working for such a long period of time on so many things.” He added this: “The reality at Riot is that we are exploring lots of different games. We have a whole bunch of RND teams exploring different opportunities that we think would resonate with players.”

Of course, apart from said MMO tweet and rumors of a League of Legends fighting game (developed by the team that worked on Rising Thunder), there isn't much to sink your teeth into. But what was that tweet all about?

“It felt like an opportune time to check the pulse of the community. To ask, ‘What do you think about this? Should we do this or not?’ It was a surprise to hear so many people interested and passionate about the idea.”

But are you really going to do it?

“I’m not going to answer that directly,” Merrill said. “The question that is really interesting and relevant is: ‘What does the future of MMOs look like?’ I think we have a view, others have a view, [and] players have a view. World of Warcraft continues to be a dominating game. There is a really good argument that going head-to-head with World of Warcraft may not be the best move, but who knows. We’re exploring a lot of stuff; thinking about a lot of stuff.”

It seems obvious that Riot Games is playing around and prototyping other games, and an MMORPG is a possibility. However, a long time will surely pass until we something about its next project.
