PlanetSide Arena is shutting down

We have sad news for players of PlanetSide Arena, all 70 of them. Daybreak has announced that PlanetSide Arena is shutting down on January 10, 2020, after less than four months in Early Access.

The outcome isn't surprising, as a Battle Royale game based on PlanetSide never managed to get the community excited. The announcement that it would be a premium game was somewhat disconcerting, and the sudden switch to free-to-play when Early Access started could be telling that the game wasn't raising much awareness.

While PlanetSide Arena was going to expand beyond the tired Battle Royale mode, there wasn't time for the team to fulfill its plans, especially considering that the small player base wasn't going to sustain development in the long run.

The official PlanetSide Arena announcement stated that the population levels made it impossible to keep the game going. All players who made purchases during Early Access should receive a full refund after the shutdown in January.

While PlanetSide Arena is shutting down, Daybreak mentions that it remains committed to the PlanetSide franchise, and hopes to continue its journey through the PlanetSide universe with the players. Judging by their recent talk, PlanetSide 3 is in development and is expected to bring a “full-fledged galactic war.”
