Tencent is going to shut down Monster Hunter Online in China

Monster Hunter Online shuts down

Tencent has announced its intention to shut down the free-to-play action MMORPG Monster Hunter Online. A China exclusive, this game was licensed to franchise creator Capcom and released in 2015.

The decision was somewhat unexpected, since this wasn't your shabby licensed game developed in a rush to fool some fans. Monster Hunter Online isn't shutting down due to lack of a player base or revenue, however; the real reason is an odd one: the license deal with Capcom has expired and the server will officially shut down on December 31, 2019.

But this begs the question: if Monster Hunter Online was profitable, wouldn't Tencent and Capcom easily come to an agreement to extend the deal? It probably wasn't anymore and with the successful release of Monster Hunter World, Capcom probably just couldn't be bothered.

Oh well, we'll have to look forward to Nexon's Dragon Hound from now on.
