Planetside 2: ‘traditional subscription MMO will continue to fade’

Daybreak Game Company lays off 70 employees

After the underwhelming performance and change to free-to-play for Star Wars: The Old Republic and the recent news that The Secret World only managed to sell 200,000 units, it’s clear that subscription MMOs are on something of a death march. Planetside 2 game designer Jason Good told VG247 his opinion on the matter.

Jason Good believes that “rushing [a free-to-play game] out the door would be especially bad. There’s no box sales for us to fall back on – if it isn’t fun, we aren’t going to see any money, simple as that. Luckily for us, I think a lot of people are going to have a blast in PlanetSide 2. There’s nothing quite like it when it comes to online gaming.”

He added that the current F2P model is also dying and developers need to continue to figure out new and more effective ways to handle free-to-play, which in turn will make the traditional subscription MMO fade even more.

Do you think there will be new announcements for subscription MMOs besides those we already know?
