Master X Master vs. Hyper Universe

MASTER X MASTER vs. HYPER UNIVERSE

This is the year when we got two particularly clever and polished MOBAs. Master X Master does all that it says on the box, plus the non-negligible fact that it includes a fully-fledged co-op PvE mode. Hyper Universe is an unusual beast, going for a risky side-scrolling approach that could make or break the game. Which one will you choose as the winner of the Master X Master vs. Hyper Universe duel?

Master X Master takes a page from the book of Heroes of the Storm, gathering characters from several NCSoft series in a single game. Aion, Blade & Soul, Guild Wars 2, Lineage, WildStar and City of Heroes are a few of the titles where characters were borrowed from. You have all the MOBA mechanics that any competitive player could ever wish for, including a new tag system where you pick two masters and switch between them on-the-fly. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the battles, as you have to pick a team that has diverse abilities and suitable for different challenges. If PvE is more your cup of tea, Master X Master comes with a big, polished and fun co-op campaign for up to four players. You and your mates will explore different settings taken from NCSoft games, battle resourceful bosses and have a lot of fun doing so – the PvE in Master X Master is far from an afterthought, it could in fact be its own game. MOBA or PvE, MXM has something for both types of players and is an accomplished game, one of the top free games of 2017.

Hyper Universe is based on such an extreme concept that it was hard to take seriously when it was first announced. I mean, a side-scrolling MOBA isn’t exactly on top of your most wanted game list, right? However, months passed and developer CWaveSoft, with the support of the giant South Korean publisher Nexon proved that they had all things planned out, leaving nothing to chance. From time to time, you’ll feel like you’re just playing an action packed platformer, with clever things such as kicking a ladder to make an enemy fall. It also helps that the roster has its fair share of eye-candy and draws inspiration from pop culture icons, including Bruce Lee, Power Rangers, Transformers and even Kid Icarus. A potentially spectacular fail turned into a fun, addictive action game.
