World record? Robocraft Royale is free-to-play, only one day after release

Robocraft Royale

In what is probably a new kind of world record, Freejam has announced that Robocraft Royale is now free-to-play – since yesterday, I might add. The twist is that the game was available as buy-to-play (as it was announced it would be since February) when it launched… in March 26, 2018.

This surely is some sort of Guinness World Record, right? A business model switch in one day?

Fair enough, those who purchased Robocraft Royale during that small window where it could be purchased are entitled for a full refund, so nothing was lost. However, this could also be a sign that Robocraft Royale was far from its goal of having 100 players fighting in the battlefield – in fact, the developers consider that “the game is broken if a match starts with fewer than 90 players.” And they add that Robocraft Royale’s development is community led, so this means that you should give them your feedback to improve on the game.

The announcement goes into some detail about the features that the devs want to implement, including a map update, team modes, spectator modes and kill cameras and so on. Sadly, there's no option to fully customize your robot as you can do in the original Robocraft, and this could be one of the most important points of debate for the community.

We tried Robocraft Royale during the alpha and… well, let's just say that it was very rough, as you can see below. The Steam reviews are currently sitting at a ‘mostly negative', so things aren't looking that awesome, but let's give it some time to see if it improves or not.
