Blue Protocol

Top 10 Anime Games Blue Protocol anime RPG

We’ll start with one of the latest announcements and surely one of the most exciting. Blue Protocol is an online anime RPG by Bandai Namco and it looks breathtaking.

Powered by the always reliable Unreal Engine 4, Blue Protocol follows a group of heroes and a world in the brink of extinction – aren’t they all? It feels like the best of Zelda and Dragon Quest were mixed together, with a few sprinkles of KurtzPel combat to give it just the right flavor.

Currently targeted for Japan, Blue Protocol is highly likely to release in the rest of the world. Bandai Namco clearly has a winner on its hands and has already mentioned its intention to do so. It’s a PC exclusive for now, so it should make the most of the platform, as the amazing graphics clearly show. The business model is yet undisclosed, but Bandai Namco is no stranger to free-to-play, so there is hope – Bless Unleashed is one of the latest examples.

Project BBQ / Dungeon Fighter Online 2

Project BBQ Dungeon Fighter Online 3D PC

Project BBQ will finally take the Dungeon Fighter Online to the next level. The original game remains as one of the most profitable in the world, mostly thanks to China, but Neople needs to keep up with the times and owes us all a sequel.

No more side-scrolling as well; it’s all in glorious third-person perspective and full 3D, closer to what Vindictus has to offer. While combat will be the focus, you can roam the land, entering villages and running to the next dungeon. Don’t expect it to be a full-fledged MMORPG and you won’t be disappointed; you can, however, expect a great action game with several ties to the first game, although it’s yet unclear if this is a sequel or an alternate story that shares some of the original Dungeon Fighter Online lore.

Genshin Impact

Top 10 Anime Games Genshin Impact open world RPG Zelda

Genshin Impact is the new game from the creators of Honkai Impact 3rd. Gone are the sci-fi trappings, replaced by an anime fantasy look that isn’t entirely original, but it surely is breathtaking – almost Breath of the Wild breathtaking, to be honest.

During your adventure you get to unlock more characters. You can freely switch between them to use each one’s unique abilities, something that will come in handy for combos and speedrunning. But Genshin Impact’s greatest asset is its beautiful world that you can freely explore by running, climbing and swimming, with combat looming around every corner.

While Genshin Impact is in development for mobile and PC, the latter should be the preferred version for most, as the graphics and performance truly shine. This isn’t an MMORPG, though; it’s a game that you can play solo or invite a few friends into your game world for some multiplayer dungeon romping.

World of Dragon Nest

World of Dragon Nest FAQ

One of the best action MMORPGs, Dragon Nest, is finally getting a true follow-up. No, not any of that mobile nonsense that… Oh, wait, World of Dragon Nest is a mobile game as well, despite being announced as a PC and mobile cross-platform game. Apparently, the PC version was put on the backburner to focus on the mobile release, so there’s strike one.

But there’s still hope. World of Dragon Nest features an open world and a dual weapon system where you can change between two weapons as you wish. There are no classes to hold you back, so you are what you wear. PvP will be a biggie as well, as it was expected.

World of Dragon Nest may not be the follow-up that the original deserves, but hopefully it will turn out to be better than anything that came before it. Who knows, maybe it’s an action game that is worth playing – and there’s always emulators.

Phantasy Star Online 2

Top 10 Anime Games Phantasy Star Online 2 coming North America 2020

It took its sweet time but I’m happy to see Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to North America… and eventually Europe some time later, but you’ll have to wait a while longer.

Sega and Microsoft teamed up for a PC and Xbox One 2020 release of a game that was originally launched in 2012. The craziest thing is that Phantasy Star Online 2 remains as one of the best examples of action combat in an MMORPG, and the franchise dispenses any introductions. Better late than never, right?

Peria Chronicles

Top 10 Anime Games Peria Chronicles trailers beta test

From highly anticipated and top upcoming anime MMORPG to a game that we just want to see released, Peria Chronicles suffered from unrestrained ambition and probably had to be scaled down to eventually see the light of day. It’s a mystery if the sandbox elements still made it into the game, as well as other features such as terrain deformation and intricate custom object mechanics.

Nonetheless, Peria Chronicles looks like a very decent anime MMORPG that could make some waves. Hopefully combat will be polished enough to provide decent thrills and make Peria Chronicles’ Pokémon-style creature collecting interesting enough.

NIKKE: The Goddess of Victory

nikke: the goddess of victory

We added this one just for a bit of fun, and because the anime artwork in this one is bound to be exciting. Coming from the makers of Destiny Child, NIKKE: The Goddess of Victory should feature the same style of artwork, with beautiful designs that add an additional layer of depth to the gameplay… Oh, who am I kidding? These soldiers are designed to look pretty and be the main selling point of the game.

NIKKE: The Goddess of Victory is a third-person cover shooter for mobile devices and could probably be considered a better-looking Girls Frontline. You probably know what that implies.

Fairy Tail: Magic Guide

Fairy Tail Magic Guide RPG

Fairy Tail: Magic Guide isn’t groundbreaking or terribly clever, and on top of that it’s exclusively for mobile devices. However, as far as this kind of anime adaptations go, it looks beyond decent. In fact, it’s extremely cute, if you like the stylized art style chosen for this game by Tencent.

The isometric environments feature some stunning artwork that make it a pleasure to explore. Combat is filled with over the top special effects but apparently you can’t do much besides choosing your heroes and formation. Still, I know a fan or two who are very excited about it, although a western release seems highly unlikely.

Waven

Dofus Waven alpha

I’m pretty sure that most of you haven’t heard about Waven before. This is the new game by the creators of Dofus and Wakfu, a couple of acclaimed but rather obscure French MMORPGs, and it feels like a strong evolution for the studio.

Waven is set on the Krosmoz universe, in which the Dofus and Wakfu games also take place. It features the beautiful anime style that the studio is known for but adds a few twists to the MMORPG. Your humble starting area will soon turn into a proper home, as you build and develop your house and head out for adventure. You can build your dungeon and set your defenses or participate in PvP battles. There are many heroes and companions with unique skills to master in turn-based arena combat.

Unlike the previous games, Waven comes with full 3D environments, although the characters remain in 2D.

KurtzPel

Anime KurtzPel global early access

KurtzPel is already available in Early Access but it is far from an official launch. After a shaky start leaning toward pay-to-win practices, the devs listened to the players and fixed their mistakes. Now fairer and more balanced, KurtzPel is regularly getting content updates, adding new arenas, karmas, game modes and PvE bosses.

KurtzPel is shaping up to be a great anime brawler and while I understand that some players just can’t look beyond the fact that there isn’t a proper PvE campaign, only boss battles, that’s just how it is. Who knows if further down the road a full-fledged adventure mode is implemented?

Other promising online anime games are coming, such as Uncharted Waters Origin or Mabinogi Mobile. If you have any other suggestions of your top 10 anime games, let us know in the comments.
