Amazon Game Studios’ Breakaway is definitely canceled

Breakaway

If you still had a tiny glimpse of hope for Amazon Game Studios' Breakaway, you can forget about it. The studio has officially announced that the development has ceased.

As you may recall, Breakaway was the first game from the new Amazon studio, one of three in development. It was this sort of sports MOBA that went through several alpha tests, but the developers deemed it necessary to go into an indefinite hiatus in October 2017. These usually are bad news, and it was just confirmed.

In a Reddit post, the Breakaway team updated everyone on the status of the game and the core of the message is that they didn't find that magical ingredient and decided to stop development. That doesn't mean that the studio won't go back to Breakaway, but that would take “a thunderbolt of inspiration”. Here is the message in full:

“We wanted to update you on the development of Breakaway.

Since our last announcement, we have worked to implement community feedback and iterate on Breakaway’s core gameplay. While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves. In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development.

We remain exceptionally proud of the team’s work, and feel privileged to have been a part of such a dedicated and enthusiastic community. We will reach out to this channel as soon as we have news to share regarding our new projects, and if a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes that leads us back to Breakaway, you’ll be the first to know.”

Making your first game a MOBA was a huge risk and it didn't pay off. The market was clearly saturated with entries in this genre. Hey, I've got an idea: why not make a Battle Royale game? Now that would be groundbreaking!

Enough with the jokes. Did you try Breakaway, and if so, will you miss it?
