Harry Potter: Magic Awakened opens pre-registrations for China

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is an upcoming game based on the popular franchise created by J. K. Rowling. Hot on the heels of the augmented reality game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite that launched last June, this game is described as a mobile card game with RPG elements.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened just opened pre-registrations in China. A partnership between Warner Bros. Entertainment, who owns the video game rights to create Wizarding World experiences, and Chinese corporation NetEase, is taking this game to China, with no word on a western release so far, according to MMOCulture.

The game is developed by Portkey Games and will pit you against other students from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry via magic cards.

There is some debate if this is the same Harry Potter game that was leaked a few months ago during E3 2019. The name seems to be the same – Harry Potter: Magic Awakened – but the genres are completely at odds. While this China game is said to be a mobile CCG, the leak mentioned an open world third-person action RPG set in Hogwarts.

The leaked footage even showed what appears to be an in-depth character creation, along with exploration, spell casting, and puzzle elements. There's another detail that makes us doubt that these two games are one and only, unless the action RPG was entirely scrapped – the footage shows a mouse pointer, a telling sign that the game was running on a PC, not a mobile platform.

If Harry Potter: Magic Awakened turns out to be a mere mobile card game, it may still appeal to fans of the franchise. However, the demand for an open world RPG is certainly much bigger, and Warner Bros is yet to satisfy fans in that regard. It would be a best-seller, that's for sure.
